worth repeating

Memorial Day Weekend is always nostalgic for me… the start of summer, memories of family and friends gone, graduations, beginnings, endings…. and as I grow older this particular weekend grows somehow sweeter. I couldn’t say it better than the following ‘letter from the editor’ (William Falk) of my favorite mag THE WEEK:

“… a new survey of 350,000 people found that people in the rapid turbulents of their life, in their 20′s, 30′s, 40′s, are actually unhappy most of the time – stressed, confused, full of self-doubt. When we reach the flat water of our 50′s, 60′s, 70′s, we become more content and more peaceful. Happier. My experience exactly….  I admit I sometimes miss soaring through the air on a basketball court, but let’s face it. All that leaping about is juvenile.  It’s much more efficient to pedal the stationary bike  in the basement, while watching Meet The Press. At times, when I catch my reflection of my older self in a store window, I wonder, ‘Who the hell is that?’  But my graying mop is more distinguished than the virile mop of callow youth, and my wrinkles, incipent jowls, and paunch are signs of character. Take heart, friends.  You and I are not getting older.  We’re getting happier.”
