Fire
I finally made it to the Old Newbury Bonfire last night – a spectacular event I hope to attend every year!
Set on the resting “growing fields” of Tendercrop Farms, just this side of the Atlantic Ocean, it’s a fitting end to the holidays.
Someone got the idea a few years back for the local fire dept to collect expired Xmas trees and create an enormous tannenbaum pile in the middle of the farm to safely set ablaze.
Just to watch.
Because there’s just something about gigantic dancing flames.
And there’s not much else to do in January.
A quick message about fire safety is imparted by the men in uniform before the ceremonial tree is set ablaze and tossed in with the other used conifers.
(This song echoed in the background as the inferno burned: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw40NMa_0RM )
The ash will be spread as fertilizer. As it should be.
We got a little carried away with photos, but below are some of the better ones….

Oh, how fun! Love the pictures!
Cool!! Was it hot??
I love how such an event draws so many people! I love fire!!
I do too, Joe – both such basic human desires.
It was very hot!! Had to move way back once it was roaring. Last photo is from far away, walking back to the parking area.
My lovely daughter took most of these photos ~ her phone takes much better pictures than mine
Looks like fun!!
I have some wonderful childhood memories of a huge bonfire put on for kids on Halloween night! Magical and spooky at the same time.
Holy Smokes!
looks like so much fun!
What a great idea. Puts me in mind of a viking funeral (minus the longboat). I wish that I’d known, I might have roused myself and left my cave for a good bonfire.
Seems to be all the rage in your part of the world….up here we just have our own backyard pyre for the beloved conifer.
Really? I didn’t know Xmas tree bonfires were trendy!
I believe it’s always the 2nd Sat of January, @pete – and it was very fun!! Would be more fun in the snow, which we’re finally getting today
